Wedding Restrictions in Ireland in 2021

The Irish government has announced an update to their Covid-19 recovery plan, Recovery and Resilience: The Path Ahead, including some updated restrictions for weddings, which come into effect from May 10th 2021. We know how frustrating these announcements can be, adding confusion to what has already been a stressful wedding-planning experience for many couples – if you’re in that position, we’re sending you all our love. Without further ado, here’s a simple breakdown of the latest wedding restrictions in Ireland in May 2021.
Essential Information about Wedding Restrictions in Ireland in 2021: May 2021
The following restrictions are in place from May 10th 2021.
Wedding Ceremonies: Wedding ceremonies, both religious and non-religious, can have a maximum of 50 guests, as stated here.
Wedding Receptions: Indoor wedding receptions can have a maximum of 6 guests, as stated here. Outdoor wedding receptions can have a maximum of 15 guests, as stated here
The couple are not included within guest numbers, as stated here.
Venue staff are also not included within guest numbers, as stated here.
Live music and dancing are not permitted, as stated here.
“Novelty supplies/acts” are not permitted, as stated here.
Wedding receptions are required to be sit-down meals only, as stated here.
Photographers are permitted, as stated here.
From May 10th, 2021, hair salons are permitted to open, but hairstylists and makeup artists are not mentioned in the government-issued guidelines on weddings. We have contacted the government for clarification on this, and hope to update you soon.
Unfortunately, other services are not specifically mentioned in any government-issued guidelines. We will update this feature with more information as soon as we get it.
Travel: Guests can travel outside their counties to attend a wedding, as stated here.
Overnight Accommodation: Hotel and other tourist accommodation can be provided for couples and their 6 guests, as stated here.
Travel from overseas to Ireland, or overseas from Ireland: In the guidelines for international travel, the Irish government advises against all non-essential international travel.
Travel between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland: Both the Republic of Ireland’s guidelines for travel and Northern Ireland’s guidelines for travel advise against all non-essential travel.
How long the current restrictions will last: The government has announced a plan to increase wedding reception guest numbers to 25 on June 7th 2021 (stated here) but has advised that this is subject to the public health situation at the time.
What Level of restrictions we are at: The Taoiseach has described this latest plan as “Level 3 plus”.
